An Urgent Message

Dear Parents, Students and School Professionals,

These are indeed trying times and we hope you, your family, friends and colleagues are all safe and well. We are glad to say that we are continuing to provide our students with a full academic and therapeutic experience during this challenging COVID-19 shutdown.

Google Classroom and Zoom Video Conferencing platforms are being used for academic instruction and therapeutic services, allowing us to provide students with a full school day. We routinely provide all students at Cornerstone with a Chromebook and our one-to-one Chromebook initiative, implemented several years ago, enabled both staff and students to transition smoothly to online-distance services. To ensure the safety of our students and proper use of technology, CDS utilizes Go Guardian and Gaggle.

We are also conducting intakes for prospective students. We have been receiving inquiries about students who were struggling before this pandemic and are now facing even greater challenges. To meet their needs, school leadership is conducting the complete intake process with the student, parent(s) and case manager, all via Zoom and also provide a virtual photo tour of Cornerstone. We can enroll the student now or when the school building re-opens, whatever is most appropriate.

Cornerstone students follow their daily academic schedule receiving instruction in all content areas. Individual, family, and group therapies along with services provided by our psychiatrists are, of course, routinely provided as well.

We are continuing IEP meetings via Zoom and have found this model very helpful and easy for district staff and parents.

To help our students manage any feelings of isolation with staying home full-time, we offer virtual field trips, virtual walks, virtual chess, and clubs such as Pictionary, Jack Box Games, Super Smash Brothers and Kahoot to our students in order to promote greater social interaction with their peers during this difficult time.

Parent Support Groups take place via Zoom. Many parents are highly engaged and have expressed great appreciation for the connection to staff and other parents during this time of isolation.

Feel free to call us at 908-543-0220 if you have any questions. Take care and we hope that we will be able to return to the building sooner than later.
